When to Add Compost

As an organic gardener, you’re no doubt well aware of the value of adding compost to your soil in order to enrich its fertility and increase tilth. However, one point that most organic gardening sources don’t cover is when to add the compost. While any application is beneficial, it’s best if you work it into the soil two to four weeks before you plant your flowers or veggies. This will give it time to integrate into the soil, and for the newly-changed soil itself to stabilize. It’s a good idea not to fertilize too soon, however; given enough time, weathering and groundwater movement may transport the nutrients elsewhere.
