Use powdered detergents to save water

With half the country suffering from abnormally low rainfall, conserving our precious water is increasingly important. Even little things can help, especially when multiplied by the “times a million” effect we’ve mentioned here before.

Here’s one little thing you might not have thought of: switch from liquid to powdered solid detergents. Many liquid detergents are as much as 80-90 percent water by bulk, and we’ve got better places for that water to go than into manufacturing liquid soap. Switching to powdered laundry detergent and dishwashing machine detergent is easy, but you can also find powdered soap for hand-dishwashing if you look.
