Use Pet-Safe Antifreeze

Did you know that the active ingredient in most automotive antifreeze is ethylene glycol, a poison that’s deadly both to humans and our pets? It’s a double trap because it’s sweet, which can encourage a pet — or even a child — to continue ingesting it once they taste it. The consequences can be tragic, since it takes very little to be deadly; the ethylene glycol soon crystallizes in the victim’s kidneys, causing terminal damage. Only a speedy response can save the life of any animal or person who’s ingested antifreeze.

The best preventative is to use propylene glycol antifreeze, which is less toxic than brands that use ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol products may be more expensive than their ethylene glycol-based counterparts, but they’re easy to find nowadays, and they’re the ecologically responsible way to go.
