For climbing plants like pole beans, peas, indeterminate tomatoes, and others that need support in order to maximize production, consider using small extendable curtain rods as support stakes. It’s easy to adjust their height without disturbing the plant, and they can be used for several years, unlike most wooden and bamboo support stakes. You don’t have to buy them new; this is an excellent way to recycle any curtain rods that happen to be languishing in your garage. Otherwise, you should be able to find cheap curtain rods without too much effort at local thrift shops or garage sales.
