Your dog or cat may not be eager to cooperate, but a good way to quickly get rid of small numbers of fleas and ticks on your pet is to roll a lint roller over their fur. You can get a lint roller relatively inexpensively at almost any department store or dry cleaner. Not only will it get rid of the pests, it’ll pick up most of their eggs, and it’ll pull off any loose fur that might otherwise stick to your furniture and clothes.
Once you’ve completed your treatment, it’s a snap to peel off the used layer. Be sure to put it into a sealed plastic or paper bag and dispose of it somewhere other than your home. The local health department may be able to recommend a good disposal location; otherwise, you can take it to the local dump.

I have spent my life with cats and I find this tip a little hard to believe. Anyone who has dealt with fleas knows they are not to be deterred by (of all things) a lint roller. The eggs do not reside on the cat but in carpet, furniture, and the cat’s bedding; and the fleas themselves are well-nigh indestructible.
However, I will share what worked for us years ago when we wound up with a serious flea infestation:
- take all loose fabrics (rugs, couch pillows, etc), wash and dry them by machine, then bag tightly in large trash bags
- vacuum the carpet and furniture daily
- remove the vacuum bag immediately after vacuuming and put it outdoors in a metal trash can
Repeat for a minimum of two weeks or until you no longer see the pests in your house or on your cats.
We spent months trying every pesticide recommended by our vet and this worked better than any of them.
