Barbecuing is an American rite of passage, especially in places like Texas, Memphis, and Kansas City. However, it’s an unavoidable fact that barbecuing releases significant amounts of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere, along with toxic fumes when commercially-prepared charcoal starter and charcoal briquettes are used. This has become enough of a problem that some cities have actually banned barbecuing!

Here’s a cleaner option if you’d like to keep cooking out-of-doors: use a solar cooker instead. They’re viable in most of the central and western states, and they can be built from inexpensive materials—including cardboard, tinfoil, and even windshield shades. You can get detailed plans for a number of different solar cookers right here.
