Rural folks have long been aware the practical advantages of having trees planted around their houses. Mature trees act as windbreaks, cast shade that can help cool a house in the summer, provide composting materials, offer havens for birds and other animals, and can (if judiciously chosen) provide food in the form of nuts or fruit.
