I have to disagree with this one. I switched to CFLs throughout the house but now am switching back. They completely suck...
1) The light is harsh on the eyes no matter the color temp. I am not sure why but I tried the whole range from the spiral looking ones to the normal bulb looking ones from "soft" through standard flourescent
2) The lights take too long to reach full brightness. It takes a few minutes for the CFLs to put out their rated light. Examples: a) I replaced the garage overhead lights with CFLs but it is still as dim as a cave by the time I am loaded up and opening the garage to back out. Completely useless unless you like stumbling around in the dark. b) Closets...same problem but worse. c) Bathroom, ditto, although sometimes you will be in the bathroom long enough for it to make sense.
3) Toxic disposal. My 2yo daughter managed to break a lamp. Due to the mercury content it has to be 'properly disposed of'...officially at least the regular trash pickup won't take them. Unoffocially of course they will but how is that good for the environment.

Plus they are not cheap.

CFLs make zero sense as far as I am concerned. On net I think they are actually a step backwards from incandescents. Halogens are a better bet. Long life and 20% power savings over incandescent (worse than CFL but without the negatives).
