Start with Organic Vegetable Seeds

by kswanson56 on September 11, 2007

If you want to start growing organic vegetables, be sure you start out with organic vegetable seeds — that is, seeds that have never been touched by chemicals. Otherwise you may be shooting yourself in the foot, figuratively speaking, since the idea is to avoid all chemical contamination. Organic seeds are perfectly suited to your organic gardening needs, since they were produced in an eco-friendly way. Quiz your seed-supplier carefully on the origins and characteristics of their seeds. If you’re concerned about genetically modified crops, be sure to check into that possibility too. After the first year, you can always collect your own seeds for the propagation of your favorite crops, if you want.

What do you think? Do organic seeds really make a difference to you? Leave a comment!

I say absolutely organic seeds make a difference. Not only will it start your garden off free from any residue of nasty chemical comounds but it will help the organic gardening community to grow (no pun intended).

I’m sure they make a difference, but I have some concern that this might be the step that make some people feel, “Too much work!” Searching out organic seeds seems like more of a bonus to me, for those who want to go the extra mile. Growing organically is a terrific accomplishment, regardless of whether you go for organic seeds or seeds in the 10 cent pack at the drugstore. Let’s not downgrade or belittle those who don’t go whole hog (so to speak). Every little bit helps!

If a plant is organic, then it must have come from organic seeds. But the important thing is to know the history of what you buy, to be able to trace the growing programme. Then you can check that you are safe.
