Spot Weeding as an Alternative to Herbicides

If you have a relatively small lawn and don’t mind putting in some work, consider exclusively spot weeding your yard instead of dousing it with an organic herbicide.

Spot weeding is one of the more effective ways to get the job done, and it lets you get up close and personal with your plants. Keep two things in mind: you’ll need to grub out the weed’s roots, so that they don’t grow back, and you’ll want to disturb the soil as little as possible — not only to limit the visible damage to your yard, but also so you don’t encourage new weed seeds to grow. A long-handled fishtail weeder or Japanese hori hori knife will help you do both.
