In the past we’ve recommended leaving weeds (that is, plants you have no use for) alone if you’re not using a plot of ground and they’re not hurting anything, if only because their presence deters erosion. But weeds can have other benefits: not only can they serve as indicators of soil conditions, they can also help break up the subsoil, pump deeply-buried nutrients up closer to the surface, provide cover for beneficial soil organisms, and “fiberize” the soil, making it more friable and increasing the tilth.
So don’t just pull them because they’re weeds, or you may end up harming your soil.
Now, if weeds are in your way or trying to compete with plants- different story. Don’t miss our store sections on weeding tools and organic weed killers.
