Protect Your Garden with Nurse Crops

Sometimes the best way to help your more delicate garden plants survive is to grow them with so-called “nurse crops.” This concept is distinct from the idea of catch crops, which divert inimical pests; in most cases, nurse crops simply protect newly emerged or less robust plants from the elements, though some help prepare the soil for their weaker brethren by breaking up and aerating it with their roots, or by suppressing weeds. Examples of protective nurse crops include borage for strawberries, and fruit trees that protect cane crops like raspberries and blackberries.
