Today, I’d like to talk about the Classic Cape Cod Weeder, which we’ve been trying out at our home over the last couple of months. We have plenty of weeds so we’ve put it to good use.
We’ve actually been using the Cape Cod Weeder along with the similarly-sized hand-held Circle Hoe Weeder, which we will review in the next couple of days.
The first thing I would like to say about the Classic Cape Cod is that for the money, this is an excellent multi-purpose and quality weeder. It costs just $13.99 plus the shipping and handling, which is truly a bargain.
The design for this weeder has been around since the 19th century, where it was used by farmers and gardeners in New England as a tool for weeding and harvesting. It has a 3-inch long blade with a pointed tip. One end of the blade is fairly sharp, and the other has a flat edge.
If you grab a large clump of grass or weeds by the top, a swift pull with the sharp edge removes them quickly and easily.
One of things I really like about the design of this weeder is the pointed blade. We’ve used it to dig out grass and weeds from the cracks in sidewalks very effectively.
Another nice feature is that it is small, so that you can work around your vegetables and ornamentals to do some detail work.
I personally like the design of the Circle Hoe Weeder for digging up weeds by the roots. You can read the full review soon to find out why, but basically it’s because you can pull up individual weeds easily by the roots without disrupting the soil. However, the Cape Cod weeder works great to dig up dandelions and other weeds in the lawn a lot better than the Circle Hoe.
Therefore, I like to think of the Classic Cape Cod and the Circle Hoe and the “dynamic duo” of weeders.
When I want to remove clumps of weeds and grass, or dig out grass from sidewalk cracks, I go for the Cape Cod. If I want to remove weeds deeply without disrupting the soil too much in the garden, the Circle Hoe is my pick.
