Just because the winter gets frosty in your neck of the woods doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your aquatic plants to the elements every year. Your first task for winterizing the water garden is to dig up your lilies, lotuses, rushes, flags, and the like, plant them in containers containing wet sand, and store them in a warm place for the duration of the winter.

Remember to keep the sand constantly wet in order to properly maintain the plants. As for the garden itself, drain the water, fill the basin with straw, and cover the top with boards. Once spring arrives, all you need to do to re-establish your water garden is reverse the process.
