Organic “Lasagna” Gardening Method

One organic way to garden more effectively — and cut back on weeds while you’re at it — is to practice what’s called “lasagna gardening” (because of the layering). Start out by putting a thick layer of wet newspaper or cardboard over last year’s leftover plants, then cover that with a layer of mulch 18-24 inches thick. Once you’re satisfied with the mulching, practice close planting — crowd your plants together so that they can crowd out weeds. Water them generously, give them the right amount of sun, and they’ll be fine. For more information on this organic gardening method, check out the book Lasagna Gardening by Patricia Lanza.
