There’s a good reason some of us fondly call our kids “rugrats”—before they learn to walk, they’ve gotta crawl. But have you ever considered what it is they’re crawling on? Most modern carpets are made of artificial fibers that are treated with dangerous chemicals intended to make them easily cleaned or more fire-retardant. The same is true even of most natural wool carpets. Do you really want your baby scuffing through that on her hands and knees?
It’s a better idea to replace your carpets, if you can, with easily-washed rugs made from natural fibers. But that’s an expensive solution; so for most of us, a better option would be to place natural fiber rugs atop the treated carpets in baby’s favored crawling area. If you don’t have carpets, consider refinishing your floors with a water-based compound that’s low in volatile chemicals, and use strictly organic cleaners when mopping and scrubbing.
Finally, if you ever have the need to replace your flooring, consider using a purely organic material such as cork, bamboo, or linoleum. Not only are these materials free of nasty chemicals, they’ll be smoother and softer for the kiddies to crawl and toddle on.
Check out this quick video of an eco shipping container with bamboo floors! We got a shipment of Tumbleweed Composters, and we were pumped about the shipping container being floored with bamboo. If it’s a safe, organic choice for a home with crawling kids, then you know its good enough for our Tumbleweed Composters!
