Nails for Your African Violets

Are your African violets turning a sickly yellow? If so, they’re probably not getting enough iron, a condition to which these plants are particularly susceptible. Iron is a micronutrient necessary for chlorophyll formation, and violets are often attacked by a bacterium called Pectobacterium chrysanthemi, which competes very effectively with the plants for the iron they both need.

A simple way to provide more than enough iron for both, without resorting to chemical fertilizers, is to stick several rusty nails into the soil around the plant. The violets will get all the iron they need, and all other things being equal, should thrive.

If that doesn’t work, Dr. Iron offers an excellent cure for iron deficiency.
