I usually save up stuff throughout the week, in an old container in the fridge, and pull out the food processor once a week. I chop up all the kitchen scraps, and add them to the center of the pile (to reduce the chance of rodents, etc.) It is really amazing how quickly they are broken down in the compost pile! And, as long as you keep it turned and keep a good mix of stuff in it, there is no bad smell (no animal products of any kind, though!)
