If ants are invading your house and you want to get rid of them in an ecologically sound way, find the spot where they’re entering and squeeze the juice from a lemon onto that spot. Lemon juice can bleach some substances, so be careful where you use it. Another alternative is to leave some fresh crushed mint instead. Ants will retreat from both substances.
What I started to use in my home that seems to work like a charm is Doctor Brommer’s Peppermint Castille Soap (diluted with water). The ants really run from it and it kills them on contact, too.
Same deal for cockroaches. Some cucarachas made there way up the drain the other day and I poured the soap on top of them. Within sections their little legs where up in the air.

Peppermint essential oil also works well for repelling ants. Mix a few drops with warm water in a small spray bottle and spray around the area where you are seeing ants. It smells great too.
