While hoeing is an effective way of killing weeds, it’s not exactly the lightest of work, and it’s too easy to accidentally kill a garden plant you want to keep.
If you want to avoid hoeing for a while, take advantage of some plants with allelopathic properties — that is, plants that secrete toxins that kill other plants around them. Both sunflowers and annual rye, for example, are allelopathic.
Annual rye is especially useful, because it also excels as a winter cover and green manure, too. After you plow it under in the spring, you won’t have to hoe for several weeks after.
