If local rules allow, clotheslines are a great way to save energy and fight global warming. They’re cheap and use naturally abundant solar and wind energy to dry your clothes.

I get frustrated at people in my apartment building who don’t use the clothes line available to us to hang out their clothes, especially during the summer. In such a hot, dry climate, our clothes dry out in less than an hour during the summer. Even blue jeans! This is about the same time my neighbors spend drying all their clothes and wasting energy.

I would like to start a movement encouraging people to hang their clothes. Any ideas??

I am a mom to a family of five. I hang our clothes out 98% of the time in the warmer months of the year and feel guilty when I use the dryer.

Actually, there is a movement already!

Project Laundry List.

They even have the Top Five Reasons to use a Clothesline, and they point out that electric dryers use five to ten percent of residential electricty.

1. Clothes last longer.

2. Clothes and sheets smell better.

3. Conserve energy.

4. Save money.

5. Physical activity that you can do this activity outside.

6. Clothes dryer fires account for about 15,600 structure fires, 15 deaths, and 400 injuries annually.
