Roses are perennial favorites because they offer such a wide range of options in terms of variety, color, and types of bloom — and did you know that they’re easy to grow organically? While they do suffer from a number of diseases, most roses are quite hardy, and can handle diverse environments with ease. Because they’re sun-lovers, they do well in arid climates, as long as they get the water they need, and they respond well to organic composts and mulches. The hardiest roses are those that don’t have a yellow strain in their lineage, which leaves out most peach, orange, and even purple roses. Yellow roses and their descendants are particularly susceptible to black spot disease, a fungal malady for which the only cure is the removal of the affected leaves and canes.
