If you’re considering tying the knot or renewing your vows anytime soon, have we got a green idea for you! Green weddings are all the rage these days, and they’re simple enough, really — though they may require a bit of ingenuity. Making a wedding green can be as easy as recycling wedding and bridesmaids dresses, or asking for donations to your favorite eco-friendly charities rather than wedding gifts. Some couples are compensating for the pollution costs of their traditional weddings by purchasing carbon offsets and planting trees in their guests’ honor. In some cases, eco-conscious couples have even made the paper for their own invitations, and served their guests locally-grown organic food on bamboo plates.

Hi Blair,
Thanks for writing about a popular topic that everyone is trying to do right. You want to keep the waste down, so a lot of really traditional wedding planning works really well. If you are having a large wedding, the rental companies for plates and tables are rented to you by very frugal companies. So very low impact. If you are having a smaller wedding, borrow china from friends for the vintage boho look that is really popular.
Making paper is more difficult than making good french pastry, unless you take a class with an artisan papermaker. There are lots of amazing eco options out there now. You want to choose 100% post consumer recycled paper OR treefree paper. InviteSite has specialized in green weddings for 15 years now, and have fabulous totally eco designs : http://www.invitesite.com/weddings/Eco-wedding-invitations-page1.php
Some papers are made from sugarcane and mango leaves, so you can have a totally garden green wedding:)
