To most of us, our car’s air conditioning system is absolutely essential for much of the year — but unfortunately, using it sharply decreases fuel efficiency, dumping greenhouse gasses and other pollutants into the atmosphere much more rapidly than if you did without.
You can save yourself some money and help the planet by keeping your windows rolled down whenever you’re going under 45 mph; conversely, keep them shut tight and crank up the A/C when you’re going over 45, because otherwise you’ll increase the wind resistance on your car and actually use more gas. If you have an A/C system with a digital readout, set the temperature a bit higher than you ordinarily would. Also, make use of the recirculation feature of your A/C system, which further cools the cool air already in your car.
