Gamble on an Odd Veggie or Two

If everyday vegetables just don’t float your boat, then consider becoming the first on your block to grow an unusual and rare crop. We’re not talking bok choy and rhubarb here, as uncommon as they might be in most backyard gardens; we mean something like an eddoe (a shaggy, taro-like tuber popular in Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean, also called a “dasheen”) or a tomatillo (the “husk tomato” used in Mexican cuisine). Both respond well to organic treatment, especially when given lots of compost, and do best in warmer climates. And the final results taste great, too!
