While it may not be as effective as our liquid dethatcher, there’s a fairly simple do-it-yourself method of lawn thatch removal that you can try. Just mix a can of beer, a can of non-diet soda, two cups of ammonia, and one cup of liquid dish soap (not dish detergent or any other powdered detergent) in a 20-gallon hose-end sprayer, and top it off with water. Then apply the mix evenly to the lawn.
The beer’s yeast, nutrients, and enzymes will encourage microbial activity that will break down the thatch, as will the nutrients in the soda. The ammonia provides nitrates that the grass needs, while the soap will break surface tension in the water droplets to make the mixture spread more easily.
