If you’re growing plants in containers outdoors, as many of us do, you’ll need to pay them extra attention during the growing season. Aside from your normal round of checking for pests and weeds, they’re more likely to need water than in-ground plants, especially if the container isn’t self-watering.
Containerized plants will also need extra nutrients to complete their blooming and productive cycle; so to keep the extra water from washing away the required nutrients, lay down a top-dressing of compost. Also, keep an eye out for signs that the plant has outgrown its container. If you don’t transplant it expeditiously, it may become root-bound, resulting in stunted growth—or in extreme cases, the roots may burst the container.
