Composting — it’s the pits

If you don’t have the time or inclination to repeatedly turn a compost pile, try a compost pit instead. Dig a hole of any size from 1 x 1 foot to 5 x 5 feet, and fill it with compostable materials: kitchen scraps (though no meat), plant trimmings, grass clippings, or any other organic matter you have at hand.

Then compact the material and cover it with a layer of soil about six inches deep, and mark the location so you can find it later. After six months to a year, the compost pit will have done all the work for you, and you’ll be rewarded with black, loamy compost that your plants will love. You can either dig it up and spread it where it’s needed, or plant directly on top of the pit.
