If you can’t afford a solar-heating system but want to conserve energy on your hot water, consider installing a tankless hot water system in your home. Instead of heating a few dozen gallons of water and then keeping it hot until you use it, a tankless system flash-heats water only on demand. Among the benefits is the fact that you use only as much hot water as you need, and on those days when you really need a long shower, you’ll never run out. While it costs more to install a tankless hot water system, it’ll pay for itself in energy savings in just a few years. Plus, you can get rid of your old water heater and use all that space!
