Beware Mixing Sand Into Clay Soils

Those of us cursed with clay soils often look for ways to make the soil looser and easier to work, and it seems logical that mixing sand into the clay would represent a clean, natural way to do exactly that. Unfortunately, that’s not the case; adding sand to a fine-grained material like clay and then adding water is a fine way to make cement (especially if there’s any lime in the soil). A far better way to loosen clay soils is to work in organic materials, particularly manures, peat moss, finely-shredded mulch, and of course, compost. Keep in mind the fact that it may take repeated applications over the course of several seasons to loosen up the clay enough to change to texture to something more easily manageable.
