Most people are unaware that honeybees aren’t the be-all and end-all of beedom. In actuality, there are thousands of bee species worldwide—possibly as many as 20,000. One of our native varieties is the mason bee, solitary insects that prefer to live in their own little individual dens. Mason bees are efficient and early pollinators that would rather avoid humans than sting us. However, they’ve recently been heavily impacted by human activity and disease. You can help bring them back, and enjoy the side-effects of their work in your garden, by offering them a sweet place to live.
