A Sandy Barrier for Your Cucurbits

One way to keep slugs, snails, and crawling insects away from your cucurbit crops—that is, pumpkins, squashes, melons, cucumbers, and their relatives—is to grow those crops on a bed of sand. It may not seem like much of a deterrent to you, but at slug- and bug-scale those sand grains are like sharp boulders and pebbles that can mortally damage their flesh or exoskeletons. Of course, you’ll need to keep that sand bed free of weeds that the pests could use as bridges to your crops, but that’s a simple matter of hoeing and weeding.
